Miracle League of San Diego
I volunteered with Rotaract San Diego at the Miracle League of San Diego, helping run the merchandise table and connecting with players and their families in a league built so everyone gets to play.

Everybody rounds the bases
With Rotaract San Diego I volunteered at the Miracle League of San Diego, a baseball league built so every player gets their turn to play and round the bases. I helped run the merch table and cheered from the sidelines. Send the runner around.

Overview
The Miracle League of San Diego has been giving children and adults with special needs a safe, welcoming place to play organized baseball and find a community since 2007. Players take the field on specially designed accessible fields, each one paired with a volunteer buddy, and the league measures success with one simple rule: every player walks away having had a great day.
I got there through Rotaract San Diego, a Rotary sponsored service club that brings young people together around community service. Game days at the Miracle League run on volunteer groups like ours. Somebody has to staff the snack bar, run the merchandise table, umpire, and step in as a buddy when a player needs one, and that day it was our turn.
My post was the merchandise table, and it turned out to be the best seat in the park. I spent the day helping sell league merch and talking with players and their families, cheering the games on from the table in between. You learn quickly that the table is not really about the hats and shirts. It is a place where families stop, chat, and get to feel like regulars at their own ballpark.
I walked in expecting to help a club out for a day and walked out understanding why people build whole organizations around this. Watching a league bend the game to fit its players, instead of asking players to fit the game, stays with you. It is the same lesson behind most things I have worked on since: design the experience around the person, and everyone gets to come home.
Skills and Lessons Learned
Community Engagement: Represented Rotaract San Diego on a game day and connected with players, families, and fellow volunteers in a setting where warmth matters more than polish.
Sales and Service: Helped run the merchandise table, keeping the line moving while making every interaction feel like part of the fun rather than a transaction.
Inclusion in Practice: Saw firsthand how thoughtful design, from accessible fields to volunteer buddies, turns a game everyone watches into a game everyone plays.
Teamwork: Plugged into an event that runs on many small volunteer roles working at once, and learned how much a smooth day depends on people doing the unglamorous jobs well.
Adaptability: Moved between selling, cheering, and helping wherever the day needed an extra pair of hands.
